Model Kitchens

What is it about a kitchen in a model home that makes it so appealing?  When the architect, builder and interior designer get together to discuss a show home kitchen, they put their ideas together for their “target” buyer.  This helps them visualize exactly who they are selling to, what that person needs, what the family make up is like and how the kitchen will be used on a daily basis.

What is your first impression of a kitchen in a model home?  Is it that it is spacious, i.e. there is enough counter space and room to move around?  Is it the look of the cabinets? The fixtures?  The countertops? The appliances?  All of those design decisions are incorporated into what is believed to be what the target buyer prefers.

To highlight these design items, you will notice that the kitchen is uncluttered, except for a few choice items.  These items are carefully selected to draw your attention to features…they really have no function.  So for example, if a designer wants you to notice a backsplash, something red (flowers, a vase, a set of mugs) will be placed near a backsplash feature such as an inset above a cooktop.  The builder wants you to see the design and the tile work, so a bright accessory is strategically placed so you see what they want you to see.  Similarly, tricks such as this can be used to distract you from something that might be perceived as a less desirable attribute.

A second purpose of accessories is to add texture and warmth to a space well-known for its hard, smooth and shiny surfaces.  So near the sink, you might see something with texture like towels or a wooden cutting board.  Again, this is to break up the monotony of shiny surfaces.

So how do you use these tips to stage your own model kitchen?  Concentrate on what you want to see, and eliminate everything else that is a distraction to that image.  Doing just this one thing can help you get your kitchen to show home perfection in no time.
